In 1984, no one bought a Toyota Celica with the idea that it would one day be collectible. The front-engine, rear drive, sporty commuter cars were generally handed down through multiple owners, driven to the point of failure and then hauled to the nearest scrapyard. The scarcity of remaining examples is one of the factors that make the A60 Celica interesting to collectors of Japanese cars. This 1984 Toyota Celica GTS Coupe, for sale on Hemmings.com, is a rare notchback version with a five-speed manual transmission. Sure, it shows 161,500 miles on the odometer, but the car appears to be well maintained throughout its 31-year lifespan, and as the current owner points out, the likelihood of finding another for sale isn’t exactly high. From the seller’s description:
This 1984 Toyota Celica GTS sport coupe, 2.2 RE, 5 spd manual, is in very good to excellent condition. It has pwr door locks, windows, brakes, mirrors, and antenna. The A/C still works like new, and it handles exceptionally well. The cloth interior is in very good to excellent condition, with only the drivers seat showing some wear. there are no rips or tears on any of the seats. The drivers seat also has lumbar and thigh support. I’m the original owner and have babied this car since it was new. It has no rust, is a survivor, and has had only minor work on it over the years, with the most recent work being new shocks and struts.
This vehicle has never seen winter, and not too much rain over the years. The exterior has some front end wear from normal driving, and some small scratches on the sides, from people who don’t care how they open their doors. Other than that it’s in very good shape. Only the orginal wheels show some wear.
It has a little over 161,500 miles, but the engine is still strong, and doesn’t burn oil. I had to have 5th gear repaired because the syncro went bad, and I had a clutch replaced around 125,000 miles, but other than that, the car has run flawlessly over the years.
This body style is rare for this year. The hatchback was more common. Regardless, there is nothing on the road out there quite like this. you can’t find this vehicle in any news paper, or even in Hemmings. It seems to be the only one out there. If you love Toyota’s, and love to collect them, then this is the car for you.
